Quick Tip - How to deploy vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) to legacy CPU without VMX Unrestricted Guest feature?

03.02.2023 by William Lam // 1 Comment

I recently had a customer reach out who was having an issue deploying the latest vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) 8.x to an ESXi host that had a CPU that was no longer supported. After the VCSA OVA was uploaded by the VCSA (UI/CLI) installer, it fails to power on the VM with the following error message:

The Intel "VMX Unrestricted Guest" feature is necessary to run this virtual machine on an Intel processor

This problem is only observed with older legacy CPUs that do not support some of the modern CPU instructions that is expected by most workloads today. There is workaround for those that still wish to run on unsupported hardware, which may yield other unexpected behaviors, by adding a VM Advanced Setting monitor.allowLegacyCPU = TRUE

However, there is a chicken/egg problem that user was not able to add this setting before the VM was automatically powered on by the VCSA Installer.

ESXi with Intel Arc 750 / 770 GPU

01.24.2023 by William Lam // 22 Comments

I have to say, the @IntelGraphics team does a very nice job on their packaging!

Look forward to kicking the tires on their new Arc GPUs, luckily this fits nicely in the Intel 12 Extreme NUC (Dragon Canyon) 😁 pic.twitter.com/DHTC93pzmc

I recently had the opportunity to play with one of Intel's Arc 7 series discrete GPU (A750), which is part of the new Intel Arc desktop graphics product line, that was just released last Fall. While the primary audience for the Intel Arc graphics is for creators and desktop gaming, I was really interested in its applicability for a vSphere-based environment which also has a number of interesting use cases for graphics from Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), video transcoding/rendering, AI/ML, Kubernetes, general purpose graphics acceleration and even basic gaming to name a few.

While there are many GPU options in the market for vSphere, depending on your needs and budget, the new Intel's new Arc 7 series could be a nice modern option as it is touted to be both price and performance competitive with other offerings within the market.

How to delete an ESXi component in vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) depot?

11.16.2022 by William Lam // 12 Comments

vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) allows users to upload an ESXi component into its depot using the Import Updates operation in the vSphere UI, but deleting an ESXi component from the vLCM depot is currently not possible when using the vSphere UI.

However, using the vLCM REST API we can delete an ESXi component from the vLCM depot with the Settings Depots Offline APIs. To demonstrate these specific vLCM REST APIs, I will be using PowerCLI (Connect-CisServer) but you can also use the vLCM REST API directly via any REST Client.
