Which VM was this vSphere VM cloned from?

This was a question that I saw back in December on the VMware {code} Slack which was quickly answered by the always awesome Luc Dekens. The solution is to look at vCenter Server Events, which are super rich in information and can be used for a number of things including identifying the source VM that it was cloned from. When I was a customer, this was something I did all the time, using events for auditing purposes but also identifying who, what and when a certain operation was performed including source VMs for cloning operations.

Although this information maybe known to some, there is still not an elegant solution that can help someone quickly identify the source VM for a specific vSphere VM that was cloned. This topic also intrigued me as I have seen this question come up in the past. I figure I might as well add this to my random scripting backlog and take a look when I had some time.

Before taking a look at the solution, it is important to understand the different types of clones that exists in vSphere today and also the respective vCenter Server events that can help us correlate to both the source VM but also the specific clone type.

Cloning Types

  • Full Clone - An independent copy of a virtual machine that shares nothing with the parent virtual machine after the cloning operation. Ongoing operation of a full clone is entirely separate from the parent virtual machine
  • Linked Clone - A copy of a virtual machine that shares virtual disks with the parent virtual machine in an ongoing manner. This conserves disk space, and allows multiple virtual machines to use the same software installation
  • Instant Clone - An independent copy of a virtual machine that starts executing from the exact running state of the source powered on virtual machine. Instant Clone uses rapid in-memory cloning of a running parent virtual machine and copy-on-write, simliar to that of Linked Cloning to rapidly deploy virtual machines

Why am I seeing HTTP communication status 404 error when configuring vSphere with Tanzu & how to fix?

One thing I love about the VMware Community is the constant sharing of knowledge and information on a regular basis. I always enjoy discovering new tricks and tidbits from the community, especially as it helps me refine my own knowledge and understanding of a given technology or solution.

My good buddy Ariel Sanchez cc'ed me on Twitter yesterday referencing a blog post by Paul Wilk about an issue he was observing in his Nested ESXi environment when configuring vSphere with Tanzu.

This was in regards to the dreaded 404 message displayed in the vSphere UI:

HTTP communication could not be completed with status 404


which is actually not unique to a Nested environment. In fact, this cryptic error message was observed even in the first release of vSphere with Tanzu which used to be called vSphere with Kubernetes with the release of vSphere 7.0 release.

Although Paul's conclusion on why his fixed work was not exactly correct, it was the fix itself that I was actually most interested in. Even with the initial vSphere 7.0 release, I had assumed this was just a cosmetic vCenter Server error message. It was not ideal, but like many other customers, I just ignored it as the enablement of Workload Management was still successful.

What helped me connect the dots was the fact that Paul solved the problem by disabling the ESXi firewall, which meant this was actually an ESXi issue. Given this was related to the OVF deployment, I immediately knew what this was actually referring to and is related to an earlier blog post I had shared about a new feature that would allow ESXi to "pull" remote OVF/OVA files from a HTTP(s) endpoint. In this case, it was not OVFTool driving the deployment but rather vCenter Server and the Content Library service, which is also responsible for OVF/OVA deployments.

It turns out that as part of deploying the Supervisor VMs, instead of using the typical "push" method for uploading an OVA, vCenter is instructing the ESXi host to "pull" the OVA files remotely which are actually hosted on the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) itself. What ends up happening is that because ESXi does not have the correct port in which the OVA is hosted on the VCSA, the "pull" method fails and it automatically falls back to the old "push" method. This is why you see the error message and then progress is immediately progressing.

Complete vSphere with Tanzu homelab with just 32GB of memory!

Since the release of vSphere 7.0 Update 1, the demand and interests from the community on getting hands on with vSphere with Tanzu and the new simplified networking solution, has been non-stop. Most folks are either upgrading their existing homelab or looking to purchase new hardware that can better support the new features of the vSphere 7.0 release.

Although vSphere with Tanzu now has a flavor that does not require NSX-T which helps reduces the barrier on getting started, it still has some networking requirements which may not be easily met in for all lab environments. In fact, this was actually the primary reason I had started to look into this since my personal homelab network is very basic and I do not have nor want a switch that can support multiple VLANs, which is one of the requirements for vSphere with Tanzu.

While investigating for a potential solution, which included way too MANY hours of debugging and troubleshooting, I also thought about the absolute minimal amount of resources I could get away with after put everything together. To be clear, my homelab is comprised of a single Supermicro E200-8D which has 128GB of memory and that has served me well over the years and I highly recommend it for anyone that can fit that into their budget. With that said, I did set out with a pretty aggressive goal of using something that is pretty common in VMware homelabs which is an Intel NUC and with just 32GB of memory.

UPDATE (07/02/24) - As of vSphere 8.0 Update 3, you no longer have the ability to configure a single Supervisor Control Plane VM using the minmaster and maxmasters parameters, which have also been removed from /etc/vmware/wcp/wcpsvc.yaml in favor of allowing users to control this configuration programmatically as part of enabling vSphere IaaS (formally known as vSphere with Tanzu). The updated vSphere IaaS API that allows users to specify number of Supervisor Control Plane VM will not be available until the next major vSphere release. While this regressed capability is unfortunate, it was also not an officially supported configuration and for users who wish to specify the number of Supervisor Control Plane VM using YAML method, you will need to use an earlier version of vSphere.
