Quick Tip - How to quickly find the release & build number on VCSA

I have been spending quite a bit of time in the lab lately (researching, prototyping, breaking things, etc.) and one of the challenges I have is figuring out which environment I am actually logged into. I literally have a dozen VCSA (vCenter Server Appliances) deployed for various testing and I always forget the build and release the system I am currently logged into. A quick way to get this information on your VCSA is to run the following command:

vpxd -v

Note: There is also vpxd.exe for vCenter Server running on Windows which you can also use.

I also noticed in the VCSA 5.1 it used to provide the vCenter Server build and release number when SSH into the host but it looks like this has now changed with the VCSA 5.5 release. I suspect this might be related to some of the security hardening that has been done by VMware on our appliances (which is great) and I assume there maybe an issue by providing the build and version info as part of the SSH banner.

If you wish to re-enable this feature, you can just edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config and specify the banner to point to /etc/ssh/banner which will includes both the release and build information. In any case, if you are in a pinch and need to quickly figure out the version, you can use the command above.

Hybrid environment leveraging SSO Multi-Master Replication between vCenter Server for Windows & VCSA

In vSphere 5.5, the SSO (Single-Sign On) component has been completely re-designed to help simplify the management of your SSO Server(s). A built-in automatic multi-master replication architecture is now used to ensure that all SSO instances are always kept in synced. This works great for a pure Windows based environment but what if you wanted to run a hybrid environment that includes a mix of vCenter Server on Windows and the VCSA (vCenter Server Appliance)?

A great use case for this would be for ROBO site management for which you want to simplify the deployment and management of these sites from a centralized location. Instead of deploying additional vCenter Servers on Windows and spend more on Windows licenses, you could leverage the VCSA. With this hybrid model you can still gain all the benefits of having a distributed SSO security domain as well as a centralized place for managing and accessing all your vCenter Servers and Virtual Machines. As you can see from the diagram below, the SSO replication is bi-directional from all SSO instances and this occurs by default every 30seconds. By joining all SSO instances under a common SSO security domain (vsphere.local), you also have the added benefit of being able to see inventory from all SSO instances by logging into anyone of the vSphere Web Clients at each site.

I was recently asked by a couple of VMware colleagues about this particular configuration and whether it would be possible with using the VCSA. It took a couple of days of tinkering in the lab, talking to some folks and several dozen snapshot reverts, but I am please to say I have been successful in getting this to work!

Disclaimer: This configuration is not officially supported by VMware as the configuration has not been officially been tested. Please use at your own risk.

Requirements:

  • Configured Windows vCenter Server
  • Un-configured VCSA deployed

Step 1 - Deploy vCenter Server 5.5 on a Windows server as you normally would.

Step 2 - Deploy a VCSA but do not configure it just yet, we have a script that will automate this for you.

Step 3 - Download configureAdditionalVCSAUsingCommonSSODomain.sh script which will automatically configure the VCSA to point to the external vCenter Server SSO instance as well as setup the SSO multi-master replication configuration. You can either run the script remotely or run it within the VCSA, but before you do you will need to edit the script and modify the following variables.

PRIMARY_VC
VC_USERNAME
VC_PASSWORD
SSO_SITE_NAME

The first three variables pertains to your Windows vCenter Server and make sure the username is *protected email* The SSO Site name can be identified by following the instructions found here. In addition to the above mandatory variables, there are a couple other variables that will automatically join the VCSA to an Windows Active Directory, you just need to enable the flag and fill in the variables.

Step 4 - You are now ready to run the script! The output is a bit verbose, but if you take a look at the script itself is is only a couple of lines 🙂 This is wayyy easier than deploying a Windows OS and then go through all those complex install wizards!

The majority of the script is actually from an earlier script that I wrote during vSphere 5.1 release for the VCSA. However, there are a couple of additions to the script that I would like to highlight. The first is starting all the VMware SSO Services and also ensure it is automatically started up during boot by running the following commands:

/etc/init.d/vmdird start
/sbin/chkconfig vmdird on
/etc/init.d/vmware-sts-idmd start
/sbin/chkconfig vmware-sts-idmd on
/etc/init.d/vmkdcd start
/sbin/chkconfig vmkdcd on
/etc/init.d/vmcad start
/sbin/chkconfig vmcad on

The final part is to configure the replication between the two vmdird instances using the /usr/lib/vmware-vmdir/bin/vdcpromo command. The command requires both the source and target username/password of the SSO administrator account as well as the source SSO Site name which can be identified by following the instructions here.

Once the script has finished (should only take a minute or two) you now can login to either vCenter Server instances and you will be able to see both your vCenter Server on Windows as well as your VCSA.

Note: Currently, the Lookup Service is shared between all vCenter Servers joined to the common SSO security domain. This behavior is not expected and is currently being investigated by engineering. In the meantime, if the primary vCenter Server hosting the Lookup Service is unavailable, you will not be able to login to your other vCenter Servers. You should ensure proper high availability solutions is provided for the vCenter Server hosting the Lookup Service until this issue is resolved.

In just under a couple of minutes you can easily deploy several VCSA's joined to a common SSO security domain with built-in replication and get a "poor" mans Linked Mode to view and manage all your vCenter Servers from a single place.

Note: Even though SSO multi-master replication between VCSA's is not officially supported by VMware, it does in fact work and is something I have been able to setup in my lab. To perform this, you just need to setup you first VCSA as you normally would and using the script above to join additional VCSA to the first one you setup.

How to generate a pre-authenticated HTML5 VM console link in vSphere 5.5 that works on all OSes!

One of the coolest feature that I have been personally looking forward to is the ability to access a virtual machine's remote console on a Mac OS X system which is now available as part of the vSphere 5.5 release. When you launch the VM's remote console using the vSphere Web Client on a Mac OS X system, instead of using the regular VMRC, it launches an HTML5 based console for your VM.

One thing that you might have noticed when performing this same action on a Windows desktop using the vSphere Web Client is that VMRC is used instead of the HTML5 console (notice the generated URLs are different). My understanding is that the VMRC is currently more performant than the HTML5 console and hence it is preferred when possible. I have been using the HTML5 based console for quite sometime now and I have not had any issues with it. I really hope to see us use the HTML5 console as the default console in the future!

Having said all this, there is a way for all users can benefit from this new HTML5 based VM console which is to automatically generate the URL which can then be loaded into any HTML5 supported web browser on either a Mac OS X, Windows or even Linux system. I used a similar method in generating the VM Remote Console for the vSphere Web Client which is VMRC specific.

UPDATE (07/26/17): I have just published a PowerCLI script called GenerateVMConsoleURL.ps1 which runs against a vSphere 6.5 environment and supports generating the HTML5 VM Console, Standalone VMRC and WebMKS URLs. As noted by several folks in the comments below, the pre-auth mechanism no longer works post-6.0, so you will need to have logged already for the console to automatically load OR you will be prompted to login before being re-directed. For those that wish to generate VM Console URLs for older vSphere versions, you can modify the script to handle those other scenarios.

The really cool part about this solution is that you can provide a one time pre-authenticated HTML5 based VM console URL that can then be given to your end users to access their VM. This of course can be automatically generated through a custom portal without needing to provide direct access to the vSphere Web Client.

Here is an example of what the HTML5 VM console URL looks like in vSphere 5.5:

In vSphere 5.5 Update 2, the HTML5 VM Console now defaults to a secure connection and the two components of the URL that needs to be modified is from HTTP to HTTPS and from port 7331 to port 7343. The script has been updated to support a new command-line option called isvSphere55u2 which by default is set to false but can be set to true to generate an updated URL if you are running vSphere 5.5 Update 2

There are basically seven important components to the URL:

  • Hostname of the vCenter Server - reflex.primp-industries.com
  • The HTML5 console port, default is 7331 but can automatically change depending on available ports on the system (for vSphere 5.5 Update 2 the port has changed to 7343 for a secure connection)
  • The MoRef ID of the virtual machine - vm-23
  • The virtual machine name - VCSA
  • The vCenter Server advanced setting "VirtualCenter.FQDN" - reflex.primp-industries.com
  • The session ticket generated from vCenter Server - cst-VCT-5254c455-4340-2185-e149-01ce44b146e1--tp-4A-88-17-7C-F5-D0-79-E6-9D-A1-E3-83-97-52-97-EA-E5-D3-D8-07
  • The vCenter Server SHA1 SSL Thumbprint - 4A:88:17:7C:F5:D0:79:E6:9D:A1:E3:83:97:52:97:EA:E5:D3:D8:07

Disclaimer: The HTML5 VM console URL format/behavior is not guaranteed and may change in the future. The only officially supported method of accessing the console is by launching it through the vSphere Web Client.

Here is a vSphere SDK for Perl script called generateHTML5VMConsole.pl that given a VM name as input, will automatically generate a one-time pre-authetnicated HTML5 VM console URL that can be loaded into any supported web browser.

Note: To ensure the URL is valid, you will need to make sure your application is setup to run like a daemon or agent. To simulate this in my sample script, I just sleep for 60 seconds before disconnecting the session. I also used the openssl utility to extract the SHA1 thumbprint, so you will need a system that has that installed along with the vSphere SDK for Perl if you wish to use the script. The quickest way is to leverage vMA.

To load the HTML5 VM console, take the URL that is generated and point it to a browser:

Since this is an HTML5 based VM console, I can even load this into my iPad!

Hopefully this article will give you new ideas on how you can leverage and integrate the new HTML5 VM Console within your environment and hopefully this will be the defacto console in the future!
