VMware Flings Update

This has been a difficult week for all VMware employees due to the pending acquisition of VMware by Broadcom. Many VMware employees are still waiting to hear back from Broadcom about their employment status either before and/or after the planned acquisition close date. I wanted to provide this context before sharing a quick update regarding the VMware Flings program.

On Tuesday October 24th, VMware Fling authors was made aware that the VMware Flings site (flings.vmware.com) would be taken down and website would simply be redirected to developer.vmware.com/samples starting on Thursday October 26th.

The VMware Flings program was operated and run by VMware's Office of the CTO (OCTO) and while I do not have specifics on why it needed to go down, I tried my best to share out the news as broadly and as quickly as I could so that folks could at least grab what they needed. While the original notice mentioned the site would function up until 10/26 at 5pm PST, it looks VMware IT had already made the DNS changes and the redirect has already been propagated.

As of right now, I do not know the future of the VMware Flings program, but I did want to share a few updates since the site and its downloads are no longer available.

Quick Tip - Easily identify Virtual Appliances using vSphere API

VMware Virtual Appliances (VA) that are built from either VMware or from our 3rd party eco-system will typically include useful metadata about the solution including name, version, vendor and other details.

Using the vSphere UI, you can locate this information when selecting a VM under Configure->Settings->vApp Options and below is an example for a vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA).

Note: If you deploy a VA directly to an ESXi host, these VA properties will not be available as the vApp capability is a vCenter Server feature.

I recently had an inquiry from a customer with over 10K+ VMs that was looking to identify this information and obviously, using the vSphere UI would be a non-starter and was looking for a way to automate this.

Improved VM Storage Policy (Profile-driven storage) privileges in vSphere 8.x

A couple of weeks ago I had noticed a few internal folks were asking about missing Profile-driven storage privileges in vSphere 8.x when referring to 2nd party VMware documentation asking for two privileges called "Profile-driven storage update" and "Profile-driven storage view" which no longer exists in vSphere 8.x when compared to the vSphere 7.x documentation.

At first, I thought this was purely a rename issue as the underlying feature of these privileges has always been known as VM Storage Policies, which is even used in the vSphere 7.x UI and has been around for quite some time. It looks like in earlier releases, the vSphere UI label for the privilege was still using the older name.

Here is a a screenshot of a vSphere 7.x environment where you can see the original two privilege names:

Here is a a screenshot of a vSphere 8.x environment, which now actually lists seven privileges, which has lead to some additional confusion.

Furthermore, it looks like these additional VM Storage Policy privileges have also not been updated in the vSphere 8.x documentation, which is currently a known issue and only references the renamed privileges.
