Playing with Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) in vSphere 9.1 using an ASUS NUC

08.07.2026 by William Lam // 2 Comments

Introduced in VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1, Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) is the next evolution of Auto Deploy. Like Auto Deploy, it automates both ESX installation and host configuration. Instead of relying on the traditional PXE/TFTP boot process and Host Profiles, ZTP uses modern UEFI HTTP Boot along with vSphere Configuration Profiles (VCP) to provision a fully configured ESX host that automatically registers itself into the desired vSphere Cluster.

While ESX has supported UEFI HTTP Boot for some time, adoption has been gradual as organizations continue to rely on existing PXE/TFTP-based deployment infrastructure. At the same time, the hardware ecosystem has steadily transitioned from legacy BIOS firmware to UEFI, making UEFI HTTP Boot more broadly available. Auto Deploy's iPXE implementation was a nice bridge to support traditional PXE/TFTP infrastructure while still getting the benefits of HTTP boot, especially when it comes to installing ESX over the network compared to a TFTP-based approach.

While cleaning out some old lab hardware, I came across a spare ASUS NUC 15 Pro that I was no longer using and wondered whether it supported UEFI HTTP Boot and could be repurposed for ZTP testing? 🤔

VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) on ASUS NUC 15 Pro (Cyber Canyon)

06.25.2025 by William Lam // 10 Comments

With the release of ASUS’s 15th Generation NUCs powered by Intel’s new Core Ultra 2 processors (codenamed Arrow Lake), Intel has made yet another architectural change by dropping the long-standing Hyper-Threading feature from the Performance cores (P-cores), first introduced over two decades ago.

While the verdict is still out regarding this change, I was able to get hands on with an ASUS NUC 15 Pro (formally known as Cyber Canyon) to see what impacts it might have for running ESXi and even VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), since that has been a frequent question from many since VCF 9.0 went GA last week.

ESXi on ASUS NUC 14 Performance (Scorpion Canyon)

10.15.2024 by William Lam // 2 Comments

In addition to the ASUS NUC 14 Pro (which I recently reviewed), ASUS has also released the ASUS NUC 14 Performance (formally known as Scorpion Canyon) as part of their Intel 14th Generation (Meteor Lake) lineup.

Compared to the ASUS NUC 14 Pro and Pro+, the ASUS NUC 14 Performance offers more powerful CPU options and an additional NVIDIA discrete (mobile) graphics that can be used for a variety of use cases and workloads including the hot topic of AL/ML exploration.

Thanks to the SimplyNUC team who provided me access to the ASUS NUC 14 Performance kit for this review! Let's dive right in 😀

UPDATE (02/20/25) - 128GB (2x64GB) DDR5 SODIMM memory is fully functional with PN64-E1, please see this blog post for more information.
