Auditing & Automating Disabled Protocols (TLS/SSLv3) for ESXi 6.0u3 & 6.5 using PowerCLI

A couple of weeks back, I had received a question from one of our TAMs in regards to automating the disablement of specific TLS/SSL protocols for their ESXi 6.0 Update 3 hosts. As of vSphere 6.0 Update 3 and vSphere 6.5, customers now have the ability to completely disable TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and SSLv3 using the new TLS Reconfiguration Tool. Mike Foley did a nice write up here if you are interested in more details.

The TLS Reconfiguration Tool works well if you have the same version of vSphere for both your vCenter Server and ESXi host, but has challenges when you are in a mixed environment like this particular customer. In their environment, they are running vCenter Server 6.5 and ESXi 6.5 Update 3 which prevented them from using the TLS Reconfiguration Tool as this is a limitation with the tool today.

UPDATE (05/11/17) - Added support for ESXi 6.5 hosts as well

Given the TLS Reconfiguration Tool was written in Python, I was able to take a closer look at its implementation and I found that the settings that controlled the disabled protocols were just merely a few ESXi Advanced Settings which meant that this could be automated using standard vSphere Automation Tools that our customers were already familiar with. As part of this exercise, I also discovered the tool currently does NOT support disabling TLS/SSLv3 protocols for the Small Footprint CIM Broker (SFCB) service which is also required if you want to be in full compliance for a particular TLS protocol. Although there is not a direct SFCB API that allows you to manage the sfcb.cfg configuration file, there is still a way we can automate this without requiring SSH to the ESXi host which would technically be the alternative. Lastly, I was a bit surprised to see the TLS Reconfiguration Tool did not have a "query" option for listing the current disabled protocols for all ESXi hosts, but they do have it for vCenter Server itself.

To help this particular customer and others who may have specific TLS compliance requirements, I have created the following PowerCLI script called ESXiDisableProtocolConfiguration.ps1 which includes the following two functions:

  • Get-ESXiDPC - Retrieve the current disabled protocols for all ESXi hosts within a vSphere Cluster
  • Set-ESXiDPC - Configure the specific disabled protocols for all ESXi hosts within a vSphere Cluster

Maximum number of vCenter Servers per Single Sign-On (SSO) Domain

This particular question and its variations have been raised quite a bit lately by our field and customers. For me, this was an opportunity to see if we can provide some additional clarification and help explain some of the nuances that may have been causing some of the confusion around the supported maximums for both vCenter Server and the Platform Services Controller (PSC).

In the vSphere 6.5 Configuration Maximum, there are three specific maximums that helps us answer our question on the maximum number of vCenter Servers per vCenter Single Sign-On (SSO) Domain. I will go through each of the maximums and provide some additional context that will help us derive the answer to our question.

The first is the "Linked vCenter Servers" which defines the maximum number of vCenter Servers that can be supported in an Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM) configuration. What is interesting about this particular maximum is that it actually answers the majority of our question. By definition, an ELM consists of a single SSO Domain. This then means that you can only have a maximum of 10 vCenter Servers per SSO Domain.

Note: As of vSphere 6.7, you can have up to 15 Embedded VCSA's within an ELM.

The second is the "Maximum PSCs per vSphere Domain" which defines the maximum number of PSC's that can be part of a single SSO Domain, pretty straight forward. The third is the "Maximum PSCs per site behind a load balancer" which just adds an additional constraint when using a load balancer with your PSCs.

Cross vCenter Server operations (clone / migrate) between versions of vSphere 6.x

When cross vCenter Server operations such as clone and migrate was first introduced in vSphere 6.0, it required that both the source and destination vCenter Server (includes ESXi hosts) to be running the same vSphere version. With the release of vSphere 6.5, this base requirement still holds true (e.g. vSphere 6.5 for both source and destination), especially when performing these operations using the vSphere Web Client where mixed-vSphere versions is not supported outside of a rolling upgrade.

Having said that, it is possible and supported to clone or migrate a VM across different versions of vSphere 6.x, for example a vSphere 6.5 and a vSphere 6.0 Update 3 environment. This can be accomplished by performing a xVC-vMotion or xVC-Clone operation using the vSphere API. For the the xVC-vMotion use case, I have extensively written about it here and here and with PowerCLI 6.5r1, the Move-VM cmdlet has even been updated based on my feedback to support this capability natively. Furthermore, you can even perform these operations across completely different vCenter Single Sign-On Domains, which enables a new level of mobility for your VMs and access to resources of independently deployed vCenter Server instances.

UPDATE (11/01/17) - The following VMware KB 2106952 has just been updated to reflect what is officially supported in terms of Cross vCenter Operations ( Clone / Migrate) across different versions of vSphere. The matrix in the KB reflects what has been tested by Engineering and one thing you may notice is that Cross vCenter vMotion/Clone from vSphere 6.x to vSphere 6.5 is only supported when running at least vSphere 6.0 Update 3. After speaking with the PM, the reason for this change is that pre-vSphere 6.0 Update 3, there were no pre-checks in the code to prevent Cross vCenter Operations for un-supported target hosts such as ESXi 5.5, which could lead to poor user experience as well as undefined failure scenarios. In addition, vSphere 6.0 Update 3 also includes additional enhancements to properly clean up failed provisioning operations which will make Cross vCenter Operations much more robust. Due to these reasons, though it is possible to perform Cross vCenter vMotion from earlier versions, it will not be officially supported. I have also updated my summarized table below to reflect what is in the VMware KB, but please use the KB as your official source of truth for what VMware supports.

Note1: vMotioning and/or cloning of VMs which uses the new vSphere Encryption feature introduced in vSphere 6.5 is not supported.

Note2: "Compute" only xVC-vMotion insufficient space issue has now been resolved with vSphere 6.0 Update 3, see this post here for more details.

Note3: xVC-vMotion is not supported on 3rd party switches as we can not checkpoint the switching state.
