Nested ESXi Virtual Appliances are now back under VMware Flings Community!

05.15.2024 by William Lam // 25 Comments

I know many of our internal teams (field, engineering, support, etc.), customers and partners have heavily relied on my Nested ESXi Virtual Appliances (VA) over the years which makes it seamless to deploy both VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) lab environments for learning, testing, troubleshooting, automation and development purposes. To support our customers in troubleshooting and prototyping purposes, I also make use of my Nested ESXi VAs on a regular basis and have found this to be invaluable in aiding my day to day work.

As part of the VMware by Broadcom "Day 2" transition, the hosting platform that housed my Nested ESXi downloads was no longer available and that impacted both the standalone Nested ESXi downloads but also the Nested ESXi Content Library, which provided a convenient way to subscribe to all the VAs from your vCenter Server.

Today, I excited to share that my Nested ESXi Virtual Appliance downloads are back and they are now available under the VMware Flings program! 🥳

PowerCLI automation for VMware Private AI Foundation with NVIDIA (PAIF-N)

04.02.2024 by William Lam // 2 Comments

With the release of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 5.1.1, customers can now take advantage of the new VMware Private AI Foundation with NVIDIA (PAIF-N) solution, providing an optimized and validated platform by NVIDIA for running modern AL/ML workloads on VCF. To learn more about the PAIF-N solution for VCF, there is a comprehensive PAIF-N Guide that includes the full software build-of-materials (BOM) as well as a step-by-step implementation guide for deploying the solution.

If you are interested in exploring the new PAIF-N solution, I recently came to learn the PowerCLI team have created some really useful PowerCLI scripts which fully automates the deployment of PAIF-N and makes setting up the environment a breeze!

There are 4 PowerCLI scripts that is included in the PAIF-N automation:

Is there a vSphere REST API for ...

11.21.2023 by William Lam // 8 Comments

Up until vSphere 8.0, there were two primary sets of vSphere APIs:

  • vSphere Web Services (SOAP) API
  • vSphere Automation (REST) API

Note: Technically, there are other vCenter Server API endpoints including vSAN, Storage Policy Based Management (SPBM), etc. but for the purposes of this article, we are focusing on the core vCenter Server functionality.

The vSphere Web Services API was available starting with the Virtual Infrastructure (VI) 2.x release back in 2007. To date, the vSphere Web Services API supports the latest vSphere 8.x release and still also has full backwards compatibility going all the way back to Virtual Center 2.x!

As you can imagine, the vSphere Web Services API covers an extremely large amount of functionality over the past 16 years since its introduction and it continues to be widely used by almost all customers either directly or indirectly through the various vSphere SDKs including PowerCLI, pyvmomi (vSphere SDK for Python), govmomi (vSphere SDK for Go), Terraform Provider for vSphere to just name a few. In addition, we also have many 2nd party solutions from VMware and thousands of 3rd party offerings from our broader ecosystem of partners that provide integrations with the vSphere platform, all consuming the vSphere Web Services API!
