Synology DS723+ in Homelab

09.12.2023 by William Lam // 15 Comments

While I am a huge fan and a happy user of vSAN in my homelab environment, it can sometimes be challenging when you only have a single node (yes, this is not a best practice nor recommended). For example, I have not been able to upgrade to the latest vSAN Disk Group version because my vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) is also running on top of vSAN which prevents the upgrade operation from completing as changes to the vSAN Disk Group is required.

I honestly have been putting this maintenance off for quite some time but right before VMware Explore, I got an opportunity from Synology to check out one of their storage offerings, the DS723+. While I have never worked with a Synology product before, I know many in the VMware Community use their DiskStation NAS for a number of use cases from VM/Application backup, file sharing, and certainly external storage for ESXi. I also found it interesting that you can also run certain types of applications directly on the NAS, which certainly pique my interest 🙂

With VMware Explore US now behind us, I finally got a chance to play with the DS723+ which has the following configuration:

  • DS723+
  • HAT3300-4T - 2 x 4TB SATA Disks
  • SNV3410-400G - 2 x 400GB M.2 SSD Disks
  • D4ES02-4G - 6GB DDR4 ECC memory (1 x 4GB DDR4 module + included 2GB DDR4 module)
  • E10G22-T1-Mini - 10GbE network module

Note: For those interested, there is also DS723+ bundle (includes 2 x 4TB SATA disk) on Amazon

Quick Tip - Automating ESXi local user passwords using SHA512 encrypted hashes

01.17.2023 by William Lam // Leave a Comment

For those that automate their ESXi installations using Kickstart aka ESXi scripted installation should be quite familiar with the ability to configure the root password as part of the installation. As described in the official ESXi documentation, the --rootpw option can either contain a plain text password (not recommended) or with the use of the additional --iscrypted option, a SHA512 hash of the password can also be used, which is definitely recommended and more secure.

However, when managing additional local users via ESXCLI system account, which I recently blogged about here, I noticed that you can only provide a plain text password either on the command-line (not recommended) or interactively, which prevents this process from being automated. As mentioned in the blog post, you could store the password and the commands into another script file and this will at least hide the password from being stored in the ESXi Shell log file (/var/log/shell.log) but this is far from ideal.

While sharing this feedback with Engineering as part of a feature enhancement request, I came to learn about a nice little utility that can be used with both ESXi 7.x and 8.x that can update local user by simply providing the encrypted SHA512 hash.

What's new in VMware Event Broker Appliance (VEBA) v0.7

10.06.2021 by William Lam // 1 Comment

The VMware Event Broker Appliance (VEBA) team is excited to announce the availability of the highly anticipated VEBA v0.7 release! This is by far our largest release to date with the number of new features and functionality that has been added by our contributors. This has really been the result of closely collaborating and listening to the feedback provided by our VEBA users and community and helping drive our overall roadmap.

For those wishing to learn more about VEBA and the new v0.7 release, I did want to mention the following two VMworld 2021 sessions that may be of interests:

  • VEBA Revolutions - Unleashing the Power of Event-Driven Automation #CODE2773 (Here is recording to our VMware Code Session)
  • DIY Deployment of Event-Driven Automation in vSphere Environments #CODE2762

Without further ado, let's dive right into the new features!
