Quick Tip - vSAN ESA Cluster Health Check returns Error message: Expecting value: line 1 column 1 (char 0)

11.18.2024 by William Lam // Leave a Comment

A fellow colleague was having some problems with the vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) CLI Installer when using the vSAN ESA (Express Storage Architecture) bootstrap method, which automatically the configures vSAN ESA on a physical ESXi host before deploying the VCSA on top of the vSAN ESA Datastore.

Whether he manually downloaded the vSAN JSON HCL or generated his own custom vSAN ESA HCL, the VCSA Installer would fail with the following error:

Expecting value: line 1 column 1 (char 0)

VMware Explore Barcelona 2024 presentations now available

11.17.2024 by William Lam // 2 Comments

I came to learn during the week of VMware Explore Barcelona 2024, that the breakout sessions were not going to be recorded, but the presentations would be available only shortly after the conference. I was just reminded by a colleague who asked if I could update my  VMware Explore 2024 Session URL Github repo, so that it included the published presentations (PDF format), so it could be easily searchable by the community.

As you can see from the screenshot of my repo, there are a total of 155 presentations that have been published from VMware Explore Barcelona 2024 and into the following 5 categories:

  • Cloud Infrastructure (124)
  • Innovation (10)
  • Modern Applications (12)
  • Network, Security & Load Balancing (12)
  • Software-Defined Edge (11)

While the majority of the sessions were a repeat from VMware Explore Las Vegas 2024, I know many of the presenters had updated their content and so it might be good to re-watch the Las Vega sessions (which you can find the full list HERE) and grab the latest presentations from Barcelona.

ESXi-Arm V2 Easter Egg

11.12.2024 by William Lam // 5 Comments

A new version of the ESXi-Arm Fling (V2) was recently released and the major update to the ESXi-Arm V2 Fling is that it is now based on the latest ESXi 8.x codebase, which is currently 8.0 Update 3b. In my blog post, I had hinted there was a small easter egg 🐣 the Engineering team had included in the ESXi-Arm Fling update, which I did not know about until they had mentioned it!

Since no one has officially found the easter egg, I figured it might be time to break the silence and share as I think it can actually benefit some users based on their usage of ESXi, especially from a testing and/or learning perspective such as playing with the vSphere API as just one example.
