DDR5 SODIMM capable kits for ESXi

After successfully confirming the new non-binary 48GB DDR5 SODIMM modules (96GB total) is fully functional with any DDR5 capable system, I started receiving questions about which DDR5 kits are currently available today and that can also be used with ESXi?

The ASUS PN64-E1 is definitely a top contender for anyone in the market for a new or updated VMware Homelab and it was also the system that I had used to verify the new DDR5 memory. In addition to the PN64-E1, the following kits listed below from my research also supports DDR5 SODIMM memory and would also be compatible with ESXi.

Note: While there are other DDR5 kits out in the market, especially those with an AMD CPU, they are not viable with ESXi as the onboard networking uses a Realtek network adapter and there are no ESXi drivers from Realtek.

If folks are aware of other kits that are both DDR5 compatible and would also function with ESXi, feel free to share by leaving a comment below.

Quick Tip - Automating ESXi 8.0 install using allowLegacyCPU=true

For those looking to install ESXi 8.0 but have an unsupported CPU, the following kernel boot option allowLegacyCPU=true can be added which would bypass the installer pre-check as shown in the screenshot below.

When the ESXi installer bypass happens, instead of an error which forces you to reboot, you will get a warning message and user must acknowledge they understand they are using an unsupported CPU and then continue with the installation.

UPDATE (10/05/23) - ESXi 8.0 Update 2 requires CPU processors that support XSAVE instruction or you will not be able to upgrade and means you will hardware with a minimum of an Intel Sandy Bridge or AMD Bulldozer processor or later.

For an interactive installation of ESXi, the additional acknowledgment is not an issue but for an automated installation of ESXi using Kickstart, this can be a problem since you are still required to manually hit enter before the installation actually begins. The question from a couple of my readers, is there a workaround for this?

Quick Tip - Adding a vTPM (Virtual Trusted Platform Module) to a Nested ESXi VM

I had an interesting question this morning asking whether it was possible to add a vTPM (Virtual Trusted Platform Module) to a Nested ESXi VM? The user was interested in testing a particular scenario with the new vSphere Trust Authority feature that was introduced in the vSphere 7.0. I personally had not done much with vTPM and I had assumed it should just work as long as you have a physical TPM chip in the underlying hardware and you have setup either a Standard or Native Key Provider within your vCenter Server.

The user observed that adding a vTPM to a Windows VM was possible using the vSphere UI but when attempting to perform the same operation on a Nested ESXi VM, the option to add vTPM device was not available. After spending ~30 minutes asking around for hardware that had a physical TPM, I remember that my Quartz Canyon NUC (NUC 9 Pro) is a Xeon based system and it has TPM 2.0 chip. I was able to take a closer look and quickly found the solution was very pretty straight forward!
