Quick Tip - Configuring vSphere Supervisor Services with self-signed container registry

08.18.2025 by William Lam // 1 Comment

When deploying additional vSphere Supervisor Services including the new Data Services Operator enabling Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS), the container images that are usedĀ areĀ hosted on Broadcom's container registry (projects.packages.broadcom.com).

For air-gapped deployments where you need to use an internal container registry, there is a process to relocate the Broadcom's container images into your own container registry, which has been possible since vSphere 8.0 Update 3.

While attempting to install the DSM Operator Supervisor Service, which had already been relocated into my standalone Harbor registry, I ran into the classic issue where the self-signed TLS certificate could not be trusted as you can see from the screenshot below.

While the validation error message was clear on why the installation will fail, it did not provide any details on how to actually add the trust the self-signed TLS certificate from my container registry.

After checking internally with a few folks, I was able to resolve this, but it took several attempts. I have already made a request to improve the official documentation to make these steps clearer.

MS-A2 VCF 9.0 Lab: Configuring vSphere Supervisor with NSX VPC Networking

08.01.2025 by William Lam // 6 Comments

This post is part of a short series that builds on our minimal VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 deployment (2x Minisforum MS-A2) and showcases how to fully leverage the exciting new capabilities in the VCF 9 platform, all while maintaining a minimal resource footprint, which is ideal for lab and learning purposes.

In this blog post, we will walk through the configurations steps to enable vSphere Supervisor with NSX VPC networking for our VCF 9 environment and enable the new asynchronous update feature for vSphere Supervisor, which no long requires updating vCenter Server to recieved new updates.

Here are some additional NSX VPC Resources that might be of interests if you would like to learn more:

  • vSphere Supervisor w/NSX VPC Documentation
  • Updating vSphere Supervisor Documentation

Requirements:

  • VCF 9.0 environment deployed
  • NSX VPC configured with Centralized Transit Gateway
  • 5 x consecutive IP Addresses for the vSphere Supervisor Control Plane VM (required even for single node deployment)
  • If you are using vSAN, make sure to silence any alerts you might have or it will prevent vSphere Supervisor from completing the configuration

Quick Tip - Disable ESX Live Patching enforcement to enable vSphere Supervisor

07.25.2025 by William Lam // Leave a Comment

While enabling the vSphere Supervisor on my VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 setup, I came across an error I had not seen before as I have performed this numerous times across both vSphere 8.x and vSphere 9.0:

A general system error occurred: Solution specification in the image are incompatible with hosts 'esx02.vcf.lab, esx01.vcf.lab'

I was going through various vCenter Server logs files, but was not able to find anything useful and the strangest part was the vSphere Supervisor Service was already up and running but something about incompatibility and image.
