Automate Inventory of vSphere Supervisor Clusters & vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) Guest Clusters

As customers begin planning their upgrade to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1, vSphere Supervisor and vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) have been coming up more frequently in upgrade discussions.

Before you can determine the applicable upgrade path, it is important to understand what has been deployed. Depending on your environment, you may have multiple vSphere Supervisor Clusters running different Supervisor versions, VKS Service versions, and VKS Guest Cluster versions, which can make gathering a complete inventory challenging.

To help simplify the collection of information, I have created a small PowerCLI script called Get-vSphereSupervisorAndVKSInventory.ps1 (I actually had to create the initial base with me verifying specific cmdlets to provide to AI because it went on wild tangent when asked to create me such a script) which will automatically inventory your vSphere Supervisor and VKS deployments. Quick Tip - Configuring vSphere Supervisor Services with self-signed container registry

When deploying additional vSphere Supervisor Services including the new Data Services Operator enabling Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS), the container images that are used are hosted on Broadcom's container registry (projects.packages.broadcom.com).

For air-gapped deployments where you need to use an internal container registry, there is a process to relocate the Broadcom's container images into your own container registry, which has been possible since vSphere 8.0 Update 3.

While attempting to install the DSM Operator Supervisor Service, which had already been relocated into my standalone Harbor registry, I ran into the classic issue where the self-signed TLS certificate could not be trusted as you can see from the screenshot below.


While the validation error message was clear on why the installation will fail, it did not provide any details on how to actually add the trust the self-signed TLS certificate from my container registry.

After checking internally with a few folks, I was able to resolve this, but it took several attempts. I have already made a request to improve the official documentation to make these steps clearer.

This post is part of a short series that builds on our minimal VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0 deployment (2x Minisforum MS-A2) and showcases how to fully leverage the exciting new capabilities in the VCF 9 platform, all while maintaining a minimal resource footprint, which is ideal for lab and learning purposes.
